This is it, our big 5 year anniversary SEO meetup event is almost here!

From our humble beginnings around a tiny table at the Panera bread, we’ve evolved into a fantastic networking organization. It’s a great group because you make it great – we have so many smart folks always willing to share ideas and help each other out.

And we’ve got an amazing speaker lined up: Brian Carter is a highly sought-after presenter who has spoken at countless major SEO and marketing events.

He’ll be speaking about: “Viral Spammy Unicorns”: How Companies Get Real Results with SEO and Social Media.

Brian is CEO of FanReach, a company that conducts online Facebook Marketing and Advertising Training.

He is also a internet marketing consultant, speaker, and trainer with 11 years experience in search optimization, online advertising, and social media. One of his websites achieved more than 500 top ten Google rankings and earned as much as $21,000 per month in ad revenues in 2005. He has doubled and tripled the online revenue of dozens of companies. Brian and his trainees have replicated this success in a variety of verticals including travel, hospitality, medical, legal, entertainment, and retail.

Snacks will be sponsored by Gutterhelmet.com. (Thanks, Todd!)

If you haven’t RSVPed yet, do so now!

Also, keep in mind we’ve got ANOTHER fantastic guest speaker coming in from out of town, for our next event on Monday 3/7. (It was originally mis-listed as 3/15). So pencil that one in, too, it’s coming up soon.

What is your website content for? Who is the audience? What you do want them to get from it? These question aren’t asked often enough when building website content to attract search engine traffic.

Some content is for customers, some may be just for links, and some can work for both. But all content should have a purpose, and your website will never meet your goals if you don’t know your audience, and what any specific piece of content is there to achieve.

Money Content

This is the primary content for your site that is designed to draw your customers in, sell product, or get you paying clients. This is all about what you do, the products you sell, the services you provide, and what you can do for your customers.

Your goal here is to understand exactly customers are looking for, and provide the answer to the problem they are trying to solve.

Most people in business get this, although there are still a shocking number of websites that are boring resumes about your credentials. Your website content should never be primarily about you, it should be about your customers, and their needs.

Authority Content

Authority content (often your blog) is where you establish your expertise, and show yourself to be a thought leader in your market. The content may be very different from your primary customer content, although there is often a good deal of overlap.

The subject matter may be more geared to people in your industry, rather than customers. If you engage your peers, you can build relationships, and earn referrals down the road.

For your customers and potential customers, authority content helps establish your credibility and knowledge, and gives them a reason to entrust their business to you.

Authority content can be great for building links from other blogs, and establishing your presence in the social media space, where you can get additional customer contacts, and build more credibility for your business.

Good authority content can also act as “Inbound PR”. If a reporter is working on a story, or looking for a quote, and your site exudes authority, you might get a call and a write up in the press, which can lead to a nice link from an online news site.

Accidental Linkbait

Accidental linkbait is when some event happens that brings an unusual spike in interest in your content. Right now, some mine safety or mine collapse survival page is getting another traffic spike, as the Chilean miner are rescued. Over the summer, I’m sure there was lots of unusual search traffic related to on offshore oil rigs and oil spill damage to fish.

These traffic spikes are not your customers – they are curiosity seekers. So, they are total junk for conversions, and actually making you money. But this burst of traffic can net you some valuable links that you never would have received otherwise.

But it only works out for you if you’ve already got something in place that is interesting, and worth linking to.

In my niche, I pull some of this traffic and links via “celebrity crimes”.

Last year, one of my sites got a monstrous amount of traffic for Massachusetts disorderly conduct laws when Henry Louis Gates, a Harvard professor was arrested for disorderly conduct for arguing with a police officer on his front porch in Cambridge, MA. It was the high profile arrest of the year, and ended in the “beer summit” with President Obama.

Smaller events like this happen all the time, whether it’s Paris Hilton getting busted for drug possession in Las Vegas, or when Justin Beiber throws a water balloon at a cop and gets charged with assault on a law enforcement officer in MD.

How can you be ready for accidental linkbait when the moment arises? Most of the time, your content has to be already there, indexed, and findable. One the event has happened, it can be a challenge to chase the zeitgeist as people try to pile on.

Mostly, it’s the same answer to every other content question: Write great content! Provide unique information, and have something to say. If people are curious about something, and you’ve got the goods, then they’ll link to it.

But, more specifically, maybe there is a weird angle or obscure fact that you can share on your site that might have a curiosity interest. Don’t be afraid to share something genuinely interesting, particularly if you have a unique insight, even if it is only slightly related to your core business.

This can also act as authority content that you wouldn’t really expect customers to directly care about, but it might pay off in other ways such as this.

Deliberate Linkbait, (or Classic Linkbait)

True Linkbait is when you create an article or page that only exists to draw links, or attract attention to your brand.

Ryan Abood of gourmetgiftbaskets.com (and a former Cambridge SEO Meetup speaker) is a master of large scale linkbait. Right now, he is using the Blog World Expo conference as a platform to promote his attempt to break the world record for largest cup of coffee.

It is a brilliant place to do it, since he’s putting his real live linkbait right in the faces of some of the highest profile bloggers in the world. He even enlisted a smart and widely respected social media blogger, Lisa Barone, to add the final cup and break the record, leveraging her influence to get him even more publicity.

What does any of that have to do with selling gift baskets online? I don’t know, but I just linked to it. Genius.

The one common theme here?

None of these strategies work if your content sucks. It is has to be good, and it has to be right for your audience, whichever audience you are targeting.
